Why the name Sheoak? As an 11 year old, I was on a school excursion looking at different trees in a riverbank area. The guide was telling us about the trees and what their timber was used for. He turned to the sheoaks (Allocasuarinas) along the riverbank and said, 'These trees are called SHEoaks because their timber is worthless and they can't be used for anything.' Can you imagine how demoralising that was for an 11 year old girl? Many years later I remember that. It still upsets me. And yet, we have all had things like that said to us, over and over again. Do you get upset by people saying things that are unfair, mean or just wrong? You can be a sheoak too. Sheoaks are strong. They are tough. They stabilise riverbanks and watercourse. They provide shelter and food for others. They show you the way to water from a long distance. Come and learn more about what I am doing to help all people become sheoaks.
